PayFast does not have one fee — it has a different fee per payment method, and the cheapest method for a R100 sale is not the cheapest for a R5 000 one. The flat component is what catches people out: a R2 fixed fee is 2% of a R100 basket and 0.04% of a R5 000 basket.
Every method is a percentage of the sale plus a fixed rand amount. Card payments run 3.2% plus R2, so a R250 order costs R10 in fees — 4% of the sale, not 3.2%. On small baskets the flat fee dominates and the headline percentage is misleading. This is the single most common mistake in pricing a product: using the advertised percentage and forgetting the rand.
At 2% with no flat fee (subject to a R2 floor), Instant EFT beats card on almost every basket size. On a R1 000 order that is R20 versus R34 — a R14 difference per order, which on 200 orders a month is R2 800 a year in margin you are handing over for nothing. If a meaningful share of your customers would pay by EFT given the option, making it the default is one of the fastest margin improvements available to a South African store.
MoreTyme at 5.5% and Zapper at 4.5% plus R5 are substantially more expensive than card. That can still be worth it if they lift conversion or average order value enough to cover the gap — but that is a decision to make with the number in front of you, not a default to leave switched on because it was easy to enable.
If you need R500 to land in your account, charging R500 leaves you short. The calculator above solves the inverse — it tells you what to charge so that a specific amount survives the fee. That matters for deposits, invoiced work, and anything where the net figure is the one that was agreed with the customer.

It depends on the method. Instant EFT is 2%, card payments are 3.2% plus R2, SnapScan is 3.5% plus R2, Zapper is 4.5% plus R5 and MoreTyme is 5.5% plus R2. Because most methods add a flat rand fee, the effective percentage is always higher on small baskets.
Instant EFT at 2% with no flat fee is the cheapest on almost every basket size. On a R1 000 order it costs R20 against R34 for a card payment.
Divide the amount you need by one minus the percentage, after adding the flat fee. The calculator on this page does it for you — enter the net figure you need to bank and it returns the amount to charge.
