The barcode symbology you pick determines what scanners can read it, how much data it holds, and how small you can print it before it stops scanning. Getting it wrong is only discovered once the labels are on the shelves.
Code 128 handles letters and numbers and suits internal product labels. EAN-13 is the retail standard and is what a till expects on a consumer product. QR codes hold far more data and scan from any angle, which makes them right for bin locations, asset tags and anything a phone camera will read rather than a dedicated scanner.
A barcode shrunk to fit a label it was not designed for will fail intermittently — which is worse than failing outright, because it looks like operator error. Leave the quiet zone clear on both sides, print at a size the scanner is rated for, and test one label on the actual scanner and the actual printer before running a batch of five hundred.
